As an athlete, I train for ten months of the year so my holidays are about spending time with my girlfriend Carlita and two-year-old daughter D’Karma. Our most recent trip was to Egypt. We stayed in Sharm El Sheikh and its peaceful setting was ideal for me to unwind. We did quite a bit of sightseeing — the pyramids in Cairo, the Step Pyramid in Saqqara and the Citadel, a medieval site housing Muhammad Ali’s mosque.

My daughter’s favourite experience was the submarine ride — she spent the entire afternoon pointing at the fish. Egypt had pretty good shopping too. Carlita and I went to a mall in Naama Bay and spent a lot of time at the Old Market in Sharm. Putting my bartering skills to good use we bought handbags, scarves and paintings, as well as Egyptian artefacts. Naama Bay is a really cosmopolitan part of the city and we’d drive there for meals. I especially liked Little Buddha for its Japanese and Asian food, and we also went to Dananeer, an Egyptian style seafood restaurant.

Phillips Idowu is hoping to represent Britain in the London 2012 Olympic Games. British Airways is proud to be the official airline of the London 2012 Games. For details, visit ba.com/london2012.
