Eight-year-old wins travel writing competition
In May this year, British Airways’ partner KidZania London ran a blogging initiative for children between four and 14 years old to win a trip to London with their family. Eight-year old Andreas Karaiskos scooped the prize for his entry about Cyprus, where he has friends and family he’s desperate to see. Find out what made his piece so compelling, and read it for yourself below…
Originally an idea to keep kids busy at home during the half term and on board when flying, the competition really took off. Kidzania London received a large number of stories covering a range of destinations including the Bahamas, Paris and the Isle of Wight. Many of the pieces focussed on the adventures and attractions the children would visit on their holidays, but most concentrated on reconnecting with family members who live in different countries – a sure sign of how much people have missed their loved ones during the pandemic.
With so many great pieces to choose from, how did the judging panel (consisting of both BA and KidZania staff) manage to whittle them down to one winner? Ultimately, the panel was really impressed with Andreas’ writing techniques and the descriptive language used to portray the wonderful island of Cyprus. He added in fun facts about his destination and ticked all the boxes in evoking a wonderful place to visit.
Read Andreas’ entry below.
Reporter’s Name: Andreas Karaiskos
I am writing about the beautiful island of Cyprus, the birthplace of Aphrodite. The island is shimmering with golden sandy beaches and the people of Cyprus are happy and friendly.
I am travelling with my parents, my six-year-old curious sister and my faithful fluffy bear, Ted.
I am going to visit my great grandad Agiris, who is 87 years old and lives in a remote village called Inia. He grows watermelons and grapes and on the way we will visit the turtle conservation on Lara beach
I like to go to Cyprus in the summer because the glorious sun is out and I can splash in the pool, visit Limassol Marina and have scrumptious ice creams.
I chose this particular place because I have family there and I am from Cyprus. The food, people and weather are great.
Andreas Karaiskos won domestic flights to London, a two-night stay at the Hard Rock Hotel London and a free family visit to KidZania London. Two runners up also received tickets to KidZania London and goody bags.
KidZania London is open throughout the Summer holidays for children aged 4 -14. With a range of health and safety measures in place, children can train to be a pilot in their very own British Airways Aviation Academy. For opening times and tickets, please visit kidzania.co.uk/
