New flights to Lapland and Cyprus

From 3 December, British Airways will be launching flights to Lapland, making any journey planned to Father Christmas’ snow-swathed homeland that much more seamless. Departing from London Gatwick, the twice-weekly flights will transport travellers to the picturesque village of Ivalo in the Arctic Circle, and a gateway to Saariselkä, a resort village known for its winter sports, including skiing, snowmobile safaris, toboggan rides and snowshoeing. From November, the airline has also launched new flights to Larnaca in Cyprus, which depart in the morning and return in the late afternoon. This means that Larnaca will be served by both London Heathrow and London Gatwick for winter, offering customers a wider choice of departure airports for winter sun.

Shoulder season trips, set-jetting and lesser-known cities: the trends influencing travellers in 2024

Hot off the press is British Airways Holidays’ latest travel trends report, which dives deep into the zeitgeist and customer mindsets to reveal what’s inspiring travellers this year, how they’re planning trips and where they want to go. Topping the list is the popularity of the shoulder season (the months just before and after the peak season) as “the time to travel”, with the growth in searches from customers looking to travel in May and June 2024 double the level for trips in July and August 2024 (compared to the same period in 2023). Interest in lesser-known destinations has also grown, with travellers seeking alternatives to the beaten track, as well as places featured in popular TV series, films and on TikTok. Budgeting continues to be a priority for many, too, with 58 per cent keen to pay for their holidays in interest-free instalments. Elsewhere, the report found that holidays are more necessary than ever, with 37 per cent of travellers feeling they can’t switch off from their day-to-day while on holiday.
