On 2 April 1900, Oscar Wilde arrived in Sicily’s capital of Palermo, and stayed for eight days – more than enough time to fall in love with the city’s striking, eclectic architecture. As a noted connoisseur of food and wine, Wilde also revelled in the city’s local cuisine at its many restaurants and street stalls. He proclaimed Palermo, which sprawls around its own bay on Sicily’s northwestern coast, to be “the most beautifully situated town in the world”.
In the same year that Wilde visited Palermo, a remarkable new Art Nouveau palazzo first opened its doors on the city’s perimeters, nestled at the foot of towering Mount Pellegrino and looking out on to the azure waters of the Gulf of Palermo. The stunningly designed interiors of Villa Igiea and its magical setting quickly made it a byword for luxury hospitality and, in the decades that followed, a roll call of royalty, dignitaries and Hollywood luminaries came to stay.
This June, Villa Igiea reopened its doors as a Rocco Forte Hotel, following a major renovation led by noted architects Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen of Nicholas Haslam Studios, in collaboration with Olga Polizzi, director of design for Rocco Forte Hotels. The hotel’s former glory has been reborn thanks to the loving preservation of its palatial interior, combined with Rocco Forte’s signature design style.
One of many highlights at the newly restored hotel is the Florio Restaurant, named after the family that first commissioned the building. Situated within a decadent Belle Époque room of gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers, with floor-to-ceiling windows, it offers stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea while enjoying chef Fulvio Pierangelini’s timeless traditional recipes, made from the finest local ingredients sourced from nearby farms. The hotel’s 78 rooms and 22 suites blend period features with contemporary flair, with locally crafted elements paying homage to the villa’s extraordinary setting.
And on Villa Igiea’s doorstep, of course, sits Palermo. The city’s twin Siren charms of architecture and cuisine, shaped by many cultures, still draw visitors from around the world, its stunning palaces and churches as mouthwatering a prospect as the delicious street food specialities to be found in the famous Capo Street Market.
After soaking up the city’s endless energy, where better to seek out open spaces and Sicilian serenity than in a Rocco Forte Private Villa? The 20 new villas are perched on a hill that gently slopes towards the bay of Verdura Resort, on the island’s south coast. These elegant 3 and 4 bedroom private residences guarantee ultimate privacy and security combined with the unique services that have made Verdura Resort famous throughout the Mediterranean.
Each of the Rocco Forte Private Villas has been individually designed and styled by Olga Polizzi, incorporating the characteristic features of a traditional Sicilian baglio building, and each has access to its own swimming pool and panoramic garden. A short hop away by golf buggy, electric bike or on foot through the Verdura Resort’s verdant landscape can be found the resort’s private beach, bars and restaurants, award-winning spa, championship golf courses, tennis courts and kids’ club.
The Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once wrote that visiting Sicily is “better than going to the moon”. For the perfect out-of-this-world experience this summer, what better than to sample the delights of both Palermo and the new Rocco Forte Private Villas, while enjoying the luxurious hospitality of Rocco Forte Hotels?
