The edit: upcycled luxury

Love them or loathe them, obvious logos are back. With this backpack you can advertise what you’ve spent your money on as well as your eco-credentials because it’s part of Burberry’s capsule eco-collection. It’s made from a material called Econyl – a hardwearing fabric crafted from discarded nylon found in oceans and other waste destined for landfill.

Name a watch after a leading explorer and environmentalist and you’ve got to have your eco-credentials on display. For this limited edition Panerai Submersible, that means a case made from brushed EcoTitanium – made from recycled scrap collected from aircraft manufacturers – and a strap crafted from recycled plastic.

Millions of table grapes – the ones we eat, not those used for wine – are wasted globally every year, so British brand Foxhole Spirits decided to do something about it, namely make gin. Foxhole gin has a base spirit made from these surplus grapes, while the botanicals are inspired by the grapes’ African and South American origins, including myrrh and rooibos. It makes for a dangerously delicious martini.

Every element of this vibrant jacket, which is part of Gucci’s first collection under the brand’s Circular Lines initiative designed to make every aspect of the company environmentally sound, is made from something recycled. The fabric is Econyl, the eyelets are recycled brass alloys and even the zip closure is recycled polyester. It’s almost as much of a talking point as the colour.

Stella McCartney is at the vanguard of ethical fashion. Her ‘leather’ is vegetarian, her knitwear is from re-engineered cashmere and her silk is harvested after the worms have left the cocoon. She also has super-cute dresses for kids, such as this one, made entirely from recycled polyester, because you’re never too young to start saving the planet.

London-based designer Charlotte Kidger has always experimented with turning industrial waste materials into sculptural and functional objects, transforming the undesirable into the desirable. This wonderfully original made-to-order side table is constructed entirely out of coloured polyurethane dust, which is a by-product of CNC machines.

Based in Los Angeles, Rafa is a luxury women’s footwear brand that makes all its shoes and boots from vegan recycled textiles. Everything is crafted by a group of 20 local artisans, all materials are eco-friendly and processes sustainable. The results, such as this Ranger Boot, are quirky enough to stand out but classic enough to wear forever.

Everything by 1/OFF is, well, a one-off. This Parisian brand is all about upcycling – sourcing luxury vintage garments from around the world and giving them a 21st-century makeover. That means anything from turning a Ralph Lauren button-down into a pretty blouse or, as shown, lopping the bottom off a Burberry trench to make a cropped jacket.

Pascale James has built its business on ethical foundations. All the gold is fair trade, the silver is recycled and the diamonds are either traceable and conflict-free or lab-grown. This sculptural cuff, organically crafted by hand from recycled sterling silver, is named after a geological term for the process by which mountains are formed.

At Teatum Jones, nothing is thrown away. At the end of a season, all remaining fabrics are archived. For each new collection, 40% of these textiles are used, while its tailoring fabrics all come from end-of-line or damaged stock to save them from landfill. And every piece, like this dress, is made to order, so no stock is wasted, either.
