Secluded St Kitts: five of the best things to see and do
The Caribbean’s best-kept secret has much to entertain adventurous travellers, from history and culture to nature and local culinary delights
01/10/2024
When Mother Nature was bestowing blessings on St Kitts, she didn’t stop at paradise beaches. Yes, the shores sparkle volcanic-black and champagne-gold, lapped by lucid azure waves, but additional wonders await: emerald rainforests and rounded peaks for high-altitude hikes, storied landmarks, reflecting a fascinating past, and a bold new generation of Kittitian rum-makers, chefs, artists and other creators, expressing the soul of the island.
Here are five ways to maximise your experience in this uncrowded yet vibrant destination, accessible from Gatwick twice weekly with British Airways.
Cultural kicks and heritage heavyweights
Journey back in time on the St Kitts Scenic Railway, opened in 1912 to transport sugar cane to Basseterre’s sugar factory. Pay a trip to Romney Manor, whose grounds date back to the 1600s. For the past 40 years, the manor has housed Caribelle Batik: a hub of batik design. Adjacent to Caribelle Batik is Wingfield Estate, which has a 350-year history as a sugar plantation. It also boasts 17th-century Amerindian petroglyphs and the Caribbean’s oldest intact distillery. Set in a national park, Brimstone Hill Fortress is an enduring testament to the Herculean labours of African slaves under British rule.
Eco exploits by air, land and sea
Modern-day Tarzans can hurtle through the air on a zipline adventure with Sky Safari Tours. Whoosh through the emerald rainforest at speeds of up to 80km an hour, gawping at the sparkling Wingfield River below. Prefer to feel your feet on terra firma? Lace up your hiking boots to reach the highest point on the island, Mount Liamuiga, an extinct volcano. Other ways to explore the island’s gently rolling peaks are riding, rainforest hikes and visiting forest farm retreats. There are an equal number of water sports. For the daring: parasailing, kitesurfing and mini speedboating. For the cautious: night kayaking in glass-bottom boats, tubing or catamaran sailing.
Island-style cuisine and cocktails
Plentiful and affordable lobster is available year-round in St Kitts. In restaurants, you will find tantalising dishes featuring this delicacy in all its forms: lobster mac and cheese, spicy lobster cakes, lobster rolls, baked lobster, lobster and steak. St Kitts’s craft rums are represented by three distilleries – Old Road Rum, Hibiscus Spirits and Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum. The latter two create rums uniquely spiced with hibiscus and vanilla.
Swanky hideaways
As secluded as St Kitts is, there are many stylish stays for those who wish to be tucked away from it all. Belle Mont Sanctuary Resort (opening image) has fewer than 100 villas and cottages with private infinity pools dotted discreetly among trees and hills. The five-star Park Hyatt – the only one in the Caribbean – sits on the Christophe Harbour beachfront and offers personalised luxury and activities for all. And Sunset Reef, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is a boutique resort perched above the Caribbean Sea that provides uninterrupted views of mind-blowing sunsets.
Sugar Mas and Christmas
Usher in the New Year as never before with fêtes, rum, steelpans, live bands and DJs and good vibes at Sugar Mas 53, St Kitts and Nevis’ national carnival. Festivities kick off on 13 December 2024, wrapping up on 2 January 2025. The High Journey creates special carnival packages where everything is thought of, from where to stay to guides for special events such as Jouvert celebrations on Boxing Day to stunning costumes for the big parade on New Year’s Day.
