Craving some culture this season? From landmark museum openings to now-or-never exhibitions, Europe’s arts calendar is bursting with reasons to pack a bag, says Gemma Askham

Europe is heating up this summer, with blockbuster exhibitions, dazzling cultural debuts and once-in-a-lifetime events that are worth booking a flight for. Whether you want to rock out with A-list musical talent in a mediaeval Tuscan piazza or take a turn around the Pompidou before it shuts for refurbishment, we highlight the upcoming big-ticket events across Europe’s most dynamic cities to help you shape your last-minute getaway.

1. Marie Antoinette Style, V&A South Kensington

If only Vinted existed in the 1700s it could have meant a more tasteful end for the extravagant monarch nicknamed Madame Deficit. The UK’s first exhibition on Marie Antoinette’s fashion legacy posits glorious couture pieces against a broader question: was she a wild spender or simply a (stylish) victim of female vilification? From 20 September.

2. David Bowie Centre, V&A East Storehouse

Bowie is the first major name to reside permanently in the V&A’s new four-level storage archive on the 2012 Olympic Park site. Marvel at 90,000+ spangly items, from Aladdin Sane costumes to hand-written lyrics and unreleased projects. V&A East Storehouse, London, From 13 September.

3. David Hockney 25, Fondation Louis Vuitton

The largest ever exhibition from the Bradford-born artist, who turns 88 in July, displays more than 400 works – including A Bigger Splash, the pool scene popularised in many an art print, favourites borrowed from private collections, iPad drawings created during the pandemic and colourful self-portraits painted as recently as last year. Until 31 August.

4. Wolfgang Tillmans, Centre Pompidou

In the Pompidou’s final farewell before it closes for refurbishment until 2030, the German photographer famed for documenting 1990s rave and queer culture takes over the Level 2 Bibliothèque. Expect bold, multimedia installations – sensitive, powerful and provocative – from the only non-British Turner Prize winner. Until 22 September.

For All That Breathes on Earth: Jung Youngsun and Collaborators exhibition at SMAC San Marco in Venice

5. SMAC San Marco, Arts Centre

The newest name in Venice’s buoyant cultural scene occupies a 16-gallery space inside the renovated 16th-century Procuratie Vecchie on St Mark’s Square. With the Architecture Biennale running through November, opening exhibitions are on brand: modern architect Harry Seidler and Korean landscape artist Jung Youngsun. Until 13 July.

6. Tracey Emin: Sex and Solitude, Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi

A Renaissance palace in Catholic Italy hosts an unexpectedly confronting type of confessional – the autobiographical paintings and neon typography of Tracey Emin: Sex and Solitude. Not one to sugar-coat gritty emotions, her 60 works tackle desire to depression. Thursday night tickets (until 11pm) offer a particularly visceral visit. Until 20 July.

7. 13th Berlin Biennale

A busy summer in the German capital sees Yoko Ono’s solo show at Gropius Bau until the end of August, while Zasha Colah helms an all-female-curated edition of the contemporary arts biennale. Its theme is fugitivity, transience and urban life inspired, curiously, by the city’s foxes. Until 14 September.

8. Helsinki Biennaali

The theme of shelter – how nature and humanity can co-exist and thrive – inspires installations by 37 artists, including Olafur Eliasson and Tania Candiani. Find works dotted around Espa Park, Helsinki Art Museum (HAM) and former military island, Vallisaari (15 minutes from the centre by ferry). Until 21 September.

9. Way Out West

A 50/50 gender-split line-up, merch made from second-hand clothing and a climate conference are the star eco acts at southwest Sweden’s sustainability-focused music fest. Charli XCX, Chappell Roan and Iggy Pop headline, before the festival disbands into smaller club venues around the city. 7-9 August.

10. Café Central

Cologne, 1967 birthplace of the world’s first modern and contemporary art fair, is in revival mode with the revamp of 1980s institution Café Central – frequented by Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons and Martin Kippenberger. Art gallery Gathering led the glow-up and opened nearby (adding to its outposts in London and Ibiza). Though it’s the graffitied aluminium bar that’s turning heads.

11. Jazz à Vienne

A 20-minute train hop from Lyon, the Roman city of Vienne hosts (mostly free) evening jazz across four stages, including the acoustically blessed first-century théâtre antique. This year’s line-up brings Jamie Cullum, Avishai Cohen, Parov Stelar and Dianne Reeves. Until 11 July.

12. Dan Brown’s The Secret of Secrets

Dan Brown’s sixth Robert Langdon novel is set against Prague’s Gothic backdrop. Possible name checks could include the astronomical clock in the old town square, Prague castle and Charles Bridge. Regardless, expect that holiday read to suddenly feel spookily immersive. Out worldwide on 9 September.

13. Fashion & Interiors: A Gendered Affair, MoMu – Fashion Museum Antwerp

Part fashion show, part think piece, this exhibition digs into the correlation between what you wear and where you live – via the lens that, historically, women were often confined at home. There are contributions from Viktor & Rolf and Raf Simons, a recreation of Martin Margiela’s office, plus personal snaps from the houses of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld. Until 3 August.

14. Sziget Festival

On the Danube’s Óbuda Island, Sziget Festival packs 1,000+ performances into six days of music, comedy and TED-style debates. Headliners include Post Malone, A$AP Rocky and Shawn Mendes, with extras from tai chi to accessibility-friendly activities – creating a full-spectrum experience for ‘Szitizens’ chasing more than tunes. 6-11 August.

15. Lucca Summer Festival Series

Ever since Bob Dylan strummed in the main square of this picturesque Tuscan city in 1988, it has lured musical greats that defy its diminutive 90,000-inhabitant stature. Within the mediaeval walls of Piazza Napoleone, catch Jennifer Lopez’s only Italian tour date, plus Pet Shop Boys, Nick Cave, Alanis Morissette and Bryan Adams. Until 27 July.

16. From Rembrandt to Vermeer, Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection, H’ART Museum

As Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary, all the Dutch masters from the privately owned Leiden Collection – including 18 by Rembrandt – are on public view for the first time until 25 August. By contrast, Drift Museum (still slated for a summer opening) will hang giant experimental installations in 19th-century factory halls.

17. Edinburgh International Book Festival

Unesco’s first City of Literature also hosts the world’s largest literary festival, where 800+ authors host readings and workshops. High-profile speakers include Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and fan-girlable writers Maggie O’Farrell, Ian McEwan, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and RF Kuang. 9-24 August.
